Sports Performance

It is now widely accepted that mind-training is an essential part of any elite athlete’s toolkit. The physical training at an elite level will only take you so far but it is the mental strength that will lead a competitor to their ultimate goals and beyond.

The difference between average and elite athletic performance is in the mind, not the body, by changing our inner game we can change our outer game, with our mind being the ultimate playing field.

Hypnosis has been used in sports for many years to help athletes address issues such as fear of failure, fear of success, increasing confidence and concentration, performance anxiety and self-belief as well as addressing a personal history that may be adversely affecting their performance.

You will often hear about an athlete being in “The Zone” referring to a state of mind where they are performing at an optimal level. Hypnosis, self-hypnosis, NLP, self-directed neuroplasticity and energy psychologies are all remarkable tools which I utilise to give the athlete the ability to move into “The Zone” at will.

Our thoughts affect every system in our body, for better or worse. When we consider that 80 – 90 % of these thoughts processes are happening at a sub-conscious level, it makes sense that the most effective way to address those negative thought patterns is to utilise those tools which allow us access to the subconscious mind.

Sports hypnosis has a rich history within the field of professional sports, including the following:

  • In The Beijing 2008 Olympics USA Olympic Skeet Gold Medalists worked with a hypnotist.

  • In 1996 Steve Collins beat Chris Eubank for the World Boxing Organization’s Super-middleweight title. Much of his sports success being attributed to the focusing of attention created by hypnosis. Collins was programmed to deliver two punches to Eubank’s one. In the fight Eubank threw 300 punches, Collins threw over 600.

  • In 1959 Swedish boxer Ingmar Johannson used Hypnosis to take the heavyweight boxing title from Floyd Patterson, he floored Patterson seven times in the third round before knocking him out.

"Champions aren’t made in the gym. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them…a desire, dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have skill and the will. But, the will has to be stronger than the skill." Mohammed Ali

In 1973 Ken Norton used hypnosis to defeat Muhammed Ali. Ken was a 7-1 underdog in that fight. Ali began using hypnosis soon after.
